Feral pigs in tropical lowland rainforest of north-eastern Australia |
Research |
|
PavEcol is doing research on pest animal ecology and control in Australia and overseas. Nationally:
Since 1991, 400 feral pigs have been sampled from the lowland rainforest north of the Daintree River and their ecology and parasitology have been studied. Population density is 10% of expected levels. Mortality and poor reproductive success can be attributed to Leptospirosis, Lungworm and Kidney worm. A new nematode parasite (Simmondsia paradoxa) has been recorded in pigs of tropical lowland rainforests of north-eastern Australia, linking them to Papua New Guinea and islands to the North of Australia. Currently, PavEcol is developing a new method of biological control of feral pigs in Australia based on their odour cues. The analytical identification of semiochemicals involved in communication of feral pigs is conducted in collaboration with world-leading experts in semiochemistry at the Centre for Sustainable Pest and Disease Management at Rothamsted, UK (www.rothamsted.ac.uk) Internationally: In Cyprus, PavEcol is involved in developing a strategic management plan for the control of feral cats in collaboration with the Ministry of the Interior. In support of this plan, PavEcol will conduct fundamental research into the epidemiology, parasitology and population dynamics of stray cats throughout the Republic of Cyprus.
